The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recognized the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for achieving the largest reported nonpoint source load reductions for nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment among EPA Region 7 states during FY 2025–2026.

The award was presented during the 2026 Annual Region 7 Nonpoint Source Meeting, held September 23–24 in Omaha, Nebraska. Adrienne Miller accepted the award on behalf of KDHE.

KDHE led Region 7 states in nonpoint source load reductions reported through EPA’s Grants Reporting and Tracking System:

* Nitrogen: 439,964 pounds per year
* Phosphorus: 236,428 per year
* Sedimentation-siltation: 149,728 tons per year

Nonpoint source pollution occurs when rainfall or snowmelt carries sediment, nutrients, and other pollutants across the landscape and into rivers, streams, lakes, and groundwater. Reducing these pollutant loads is an important part of protecting water quality throughout Kansas.

This recognition reflects the collective work of KDHE’s Watershed Management Section, Kansas WRAPS projects, agricultural producers, landowners, conservation districts, state and federal agencies, and other watershed partners. Through locally led conservation efforts and the implementation of best management practices, these partnerships are helping reduce nutrient and sediment losses while improving the health and resilience of Kansas watersheds.
