Marais des Cygnes WRAPS Grant Livestock Project
Since July 2006 the Marais des Cygnes (MdC) WRAPS Grant Livestock Project has been working with producers to install a variety of Best Management Practices to address water quality issues related to livestock within the MdC Basin to assist wth addressing goals of the MdC Basin WRAPS. Demonstration projects have been installed throughout the MdC Basin including, Osage, Linn, Franklin, Anderson, Bourbon and Coffey Counties. Projects installed include renovations to both confined and non-confined feeding sites; livestock stream crossings; and alternate water supply projects, several of which included solar pumping systems. Other types of BMPs are welcome through the grant, as long as they are directly related to improving water quality in conjunction with livestock operations.
Grant dollars are available to livestock producers within the MdC basin, which spans 13 counties in eastern Kansas. The funds are used as cost share assistance dollars for various water quality improvement projects directly related to livestock production.
The MdC WRAPS Grant Livestock Project serves as a stand alone project for areas below federal reservoirs and above the Marmaton Watershed within the MdC Basin.
The MdC WRAPS Grant Livestock Project serves as a service provider for the Marmaton Watershed WRAPS, Melvern WRAPS, Hillsdale WRAPS and Pomona WRAPS. As a service provider the Mdc WRAPS Grant Livestock Project provides grant administration services; electronic project proposal process for livestock producers to use when appling for funds; preliminary project reviews and comments; as well as information and education opportunites to producers, agency personnel and other partners.
